Edmonson Blog - FAIL!

Ok, it's been almost 16 months since our last blog post and I have to tell you, I half expected to see a giant "FAIL" sticker stamped on the front of our blog when I logged in this morning. I very hesitantly opened the page with squinted eyes, fearing what I'd see. A big February 24, 2009 last posting date was what I found! Oops! Well, we've decided that our blogging failure stops today. Or yesterday, actually. Today we're back!

Now, where to start? Well, I could give you a quick recap of what's been going on since we last blogged, but that would be one very long post. So, let me tell you about what we have coming up instead. Next Monday, David and I will be speaking at the Austin PPA meeting from 7:00pm - 9:30pm. We haven't done a lot of public speaking in the past, but we've seen how much good can come out of sharing one's knowledge and experiences and we would love to play some small role in helping another photographer find their path to success.

So, next Monday, David and I will be talking on the subject of "Million Dollar Weddings" and explaining how to approach wedding coordinators and vendors in your area to help fellow photographers grow their businesses. We've put a lot of time and effort into developing and growing our relationships with wedding coordinators as they can be your greatest source for new clientele. We will be going more in depth next week on this topic, but I thought today we could share a quick 5 tips on approaching wedding coordinators!

Call - don't email: And better yet, go visit them in person. You're investing in a relationship with these people and it helps to hear a voice or see a face. It's also a lot easier to ignore or say no to an email. So, pick up the phone and introduce yourself. Ask if there's a time you can stop by to meet them in person. Remember, these people are very busy so just popping in to say hello and expecting a sit-down meeting may not be the best idea. As we like to say, warm relationships are better than cold calls.

Be Patient: Just like any of your other non-familial relationships, you had to build them to where they are today. Relationships don't happen over night, you have to be patient. The wedding coordinator needs to appreciate your work, observe your level of professionalism and understand that you aren't going to be a pain in their you know what. A bride is full of anxiety which a lot of times gets transferred to their wedding coordinator. The last thing these people want is some new photographer causing them more anxiety. So be patient and be helpful when you can.

Manage Your Expectations: You can't expect that you're going to walk into a wedding coordinators office, say hello, and then automatically be added to their go-to list of photographers. You aren't going to replace their top photography team - at least not right away. Again, you'll need to build trust with the wedding coordinators and work your way into their good graces.

Their approach to photographers: When you ask coordinators their general opinion about wedding photography to them all photographers are the same. They figure we all charge the same, shoot the same styles, offer the same products. Of course we know this not to be true but we have to show them what is different about our client experience and our personalities first. Figure out how to provide the coordination service with something unique that they can offer to their clients that will give their brides an experience they will never forget and you are on the right track.

Relationship needs to be organic: When you shoot a wedding and do a great job don't forget about the other vendors that helped make the day a huge success. Ask a florist while they are loading in - what do they really need to walk away with to sell future clients on ideas and concepts. What does the lighting team, set designers, make-up artist etc need to help their business grow. It's not always the kinds of shots that will make it in the couple's "book" but unlike couples the vendors in your area are in the wedding business long-term. Meeting their specific needs by asking instead of assuming can set you apart.

Hopefully our first venture back into blogging today has helped someone out there having a hard time reaching out to vendors in the industry to partner with. As I mentioned earlier, if you would like to learn more about our experiences with wedding coordinators and vendors and how through these relationships, we've discovered the rules and the regality of Million Dollar Weddings, then come see us next Monday at the Dave & Busters in North Austin. To RSVP for this meeting, you can click here to go straight to the Austin PPA site.

Thanks for reading everyone! I promise this isn't the last blog posting you'll see from us. David will be here on Wednesday with images from some of our most extravagant weddings over the last year. You won't want to miss it!

This year's WPPI was so special for David and Luke. It's been said time and time again, the best part about being at WPPI is reconnecting and being inspired by the talented photographers in the industry. This year, the Edmonson's spent most of their time outside of learning, hanging out with some of the best in the business. And there was a little thing called the 16x20 Print Competition as well. We knew we had done well but were totally floored to discover we had taken home the Grand Award in the Commercial Division, 2nd Place in Wedding  Division  :Bridal Part and 3rd place in the Portrait Division: Individual. We will know our total Accolades of Excellence once we receive our press releases but we did very well there as well!

For brides in the Dallas area it's important that you know that this is a really special market - with some of the most talented artists competing and excelling on the International level from right in your own backyard. Major kuddo's to our friends JB & DeEtte Sallee who took home the night's highest honor, Grand Award: Wedding Album and 1st Place in Bridal Party. And Kevin Jairaj took home 2nd Place in Seniors and Third Place in Animals/Pets.

Not only are these really talented photographers but they are great people - we couldn't be happier to see Dallas bring some friendly competition to the perennial champs, the Australians.

We were blessed to place 1st and 2nd in the January DPPA print competition. Here are the two award-winning images for the Wedding category by David and Luke. We like competitions simply because they give us something to work on or think about all month - and it helps us challenge ourselves and grow. Besides its' a friendly banter for us as father and son!

David's 1st Place Wedding Image

Luke's 2nd Place Wedding Image

The highlight of our night had to of been hearing the very talented Carlos Baez speak about the importance of shooting from the heart. And how critical lighting is in setting yourself apart from every other "wedding photographer" out there shooting "urban grunge". Carlos doesn't speak as often as many on the wedding photographer speaking circuit because of the importance he places on being close to his wife and two boys in Miami.
The Best Blog For Photographers - Into The Darkroom

So our new blog is up and running - thanks to the fantastic hard work of Theta Interactive (Into The Darkroom) and their fabulous team. From concept to creation these guys are passionate about learning about who you are and take the standard blog design and "pimp your ride" to make it custom to you and your business needs.

First let me thank Anthony Ronga - President & CEO - who isn't afraid to roll his sleeves up and work directly with his clients. Whenever I needed to reach out and ask him a question - he was there. If there was a problem - he solved it. And that's what makes him a great leader.

And then there are the Jill's of All Trade's - Meghan Bingle and Kitty Wells. Need to find out how the progress is going - ask and answered. Have a list of minor tweaks to make to the blog to go live? - They are on top of it. Thankfully they have two heads and four arms to keep up with the barrage of phone calls, emails and projects on their plates while keeping smiles on their faces. And you can hear the smile when they talk to you. No one says you have to work with pleasant people but it sure is more fun when you get to!

And no web project is complete without the unsung hero - the developer. Brad Hassett is their Blog Guru. And for good reason. I wanted to take the standard blog and add functionality to make it perfect for our business. And some of the good ideas that start off in design - wind up not working in reality. But Brad makes complex problems simple - and you can only do that when you know how a platform works inside and out.

When we were looking for a company to partner with for our new blog - we knew a lot of what we didn't want - and some of what we did want. In addition, we were developing our new blog at that same time as four new websites with another company. Our biggest issue was to make sure that the two designs came together in a way that complimented our brand and was seamless for our Users to jump from one site to the next and back and forth. ITDR listened to what we wanted - made suggestions when appropriate and leveraged their custom solutions such as SlideShare Max to integrate in our blog. It was also important to us that the blog "had good code" took advantage of Web 2.0 standards, leveraged new AJAX capabilities and presented bleeding edge solutions without breaking on older browsers. ITDR did all of this - iPhone for MT, Twitter, Social Bookmarking sites, Forward to a Friend Viral Marketing and more.

My favorite part has to be though how easy it is to use SlideShare Max within your blog. They have made the "Code" part so easy in the admin interface that any web monkey - myself included can have a SlideShare up and running plus posted on the blog in less than a minute.

I cannot sing ITDR and the team that Anthony has built praises enough. For any photographers looking for a new blog that goes beyond Blogger, Live Journal, Wordpress or Xanga - look no further. The money you invest with ITDR will be a wise decision.
